Joining the church : RCIA
Adults who wish to become Catholics undertake a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. RCIA stresses the connection between the three sacraments of Christian initiation -- baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is a restoration of the ancient practice of initiation in the church that welcomes and forms adults in the way of Jesus as it is lived in the Catholic tradition.

This process is divided into a series of steps and stages each with its own distinctive focus; for learning, praying and a spiritual growth that respects and supports the individual’s journey in faith.

Your Journey of Faith

Your journey may have taken several years before reaching the point at which you feel it is necessary to do something about becoming a Catholic. The formal programme at St. Bernadette’s starts each year in September, normally on a Monday evening from 7.30 to 9.00 pm, but enquirers are welcomed to join at any time. See Father Peter Wade or Deacon Harry in the first instance and discuss your situation with him.

The RCIA process has five steps. There is no fixed period for any of the steps. The normal period for the whole process is eighteen months, but individual progress depends on the person concerned and those leading the course.
